What Is an EMDR Intensive?

Traditional EMDR therapy happens in weekly 50-60 minute sessions. That works for some people. But for others, those weekly sessions feel like reading one page of a book at a time—you lose momentum, forget where you were, and progress feels painfully slow.

An EMDR intensive changes that. Instead of spreading your healing over months, you dedicate half a day or a full day to focused, uninterrupted trauma processing. No waiting a week between breakthroughs. No losing ground between sessions.

Research shows intensive EMDR can be just as effective—sometimes more effective—than traditional weekly therapy, in a fraction of the time.

Why Intensives Work Better for Many People

  • No momentum lost between weekly sessions
  • Complete processing of memories in one sitting
  • Less "opening and closing" of trauma
  • Deeper therapeutic relationship in concentrated time
  • Better for busy schedules—no weekly commitment

The Process

What to Expect During
Your EMDR Intensive

Before Your Intensive

Free Consultation + Preparation

We'll meet for a 15-minute call to make sure an intensive is the right fit. Then you'll complete intake paperwork and we'll have a prep session to develop your coping tools and create a treatment plan.

Opening

Grounding & Assessment

We start by making sure you feel safe and grounded. We'll review your targets, check in on how you're feeling, and prepare your nervous system for the work ahead.

Core Processing

EMDR Reprocessing

This is the heart of the intensive. Using bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or sounds), we'll process your target memories. We take breaks as needed—this is a marathon, not a sprint.

Integration

Strengthening & Closure

We install positive beliefs, strengthen your resources, and make sure you leave feeling stable and grounded—not raw and exposed. You'll have tools for self-care in the days that follow.

After

Follow-Up Support

Processing continues after you leave. We'll schedule a follow-up session to check on your progress, address anything that came up, and determine if additional work would be helpful.

Carissa Keeter, LCSW

I'm Carissa. I specialize in helping people heal from trauma—whether that's childhood wounds, military service, first responder experiences, or a single event that changed everything.

I'm EMDRIA-certified, which means I've completed advanced training beyond basic EMDR. It matters because trauma work requires precision, attunement, and knowing when to push and when to pause.

As a military spouse myself, I have a personal understanding of the challenges service members, veterans, and their families face. I also use CBT, DBT, and Internal Family Systems depending on what you need.

What Clients Say After Their Intensive

"I'd been in talk therapy for 5 years. I understood my trauma intellectually, but I was still having panic attacks. After one EMDR intensive, those same memories don't trigger me anymore. It's like the volume got turned down."

"As a first responder, I couldn't commit to weekly therapy. The intensive format was perfect—I took one day off, did the work, and felt different immediately. Carissa understood what I'd seen without me having to explain."

"I was skeptical that moving my eyes could do anything for trauma I'd carried for 20 years. I was wrong. The intensive gave me my life back. I wish I'd done this years ago instead of just coping."

Questions

EMDR Intensive FAQs

Is an EMDR intensive exhausting?
It's intense (the name is accurate), but we build in breaks and monitor your nervous system throughout. Most people feel tired afterward but also lighter—like something heavy finally lifted.
Can intensives be done online?
Yes! We offer virtual EMDR intensives for anyone in Colorado. Many people actually prefer the comfort and privacy of doing this work from home. In-person is available at our Castle Rock office.
What if I have complex or childhood trauma?
Complex trauma can absolutely be addressed through intensives. You may need multiple intensive sessions over time rather than processing everything in one day. We'll create a realistic plan during your consultation.
How do I know if I'm ready for an intensive?
Good candidates are motivated, emotionally stable enough to tolerate difficult feelings, and have some coping skills in place. We assess readiness during your consultation and prep session—we won't push you into something you're not ready for.
What should I do after the intensive?
Plan a low-key evening and next day if possible. Processing continues for 24-72 hours. Stay hydrated, journal if you want, and use the grounding tools we practiced. We'll check in with a follow-up session.
How far in advance should I book?
Intensives typically require 2-3 weeks advance booking to allow time for intake paperwork and a prep session. Contact us to check availability.
