“He comes to bed. He waits until I fall asleep. Then he gets back up.”
He did not deny it. He explained it. He said the thing was finally working, that he was close on something, and that he would slow down after this one project. He was not being paid for it. Nobody had asked him to build it. She had heard that sentence before, and so had he, which is probably why he could not quite look at her while he said it.
That couple is a composite. My work is couples therapy, so I am in the room with both people at once. In one recent week, three different couples brought me some version of that exchange. Different ages, different jobs, no connection to each other. Details here are blended and reordered so no real couple is identifiable, and no story below belongs to any one of them.
None of them called it an addiction. One partner called it “that thing he does at night.” The other called it work.
That is what AI coding addiction often looks like when it first walks into a therapy room. Not a confession. An argument neither person knows how to win.

This one is new. There is no villain in the room. He is thirty feet away building something, and she cannot explain, even to herself, why it feels exactly like being left.

What Is AI Coding Addiction?
AI coding addiction is an informal term for AI-assisted coding that becomes difficult to control and continues despite meaningful harm. It may involve tools such as OpenAI Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Replit, Lovable, Bolt, Grok, or other AI development agents.
The activity is often called vibe coding when someone describes what they want in ordinary language and lets an AI system generate much of the code. Vibe coding can be useful, creative, and fun. It becomes concerning when building stops feeling like a choice and begins crowding out sleep, parenting, work obligations, health, or connection with a partner.
Hours alone do not determine whether a pattern is unhealthy. A professional developer may work a planned eight-hour day and disengage afterward. Someone else may spend fewer hours coding but experience intense preoccupation, secrecy, failed attempts to stop, and relationship conflict.
Is “Addiction” the Right Word?
It is the phrase people are searching and using to describe the experience, but it is not an established diagnosis. For that reason, I use “AI coding addiction” in the title and everyday discussion while using problematic AI coding use when clinical precision matters.
The American Psychiatric Association says gambling disorder is the only behavioral addiction formally classified in the DSM-5-TR. Internet Gaming Disorder is listed as a condition for further research. AI coding addiction is not currently a DSM-5-TR diagnosis.
A 2026 review of problematic generative AI use found early evidence of compulsive use and functional impairment in some people, but emphasized that research is limited and the boundaries between intense engagement, problematic use, and addiction-like behavior remain unclear.
A separate 2026 study involving 1,295 university students developed a scale for generative AI dependency in programming. It identified cognitive, emotional, and behavioral forms of dependency. That is meaningful early research, but it does not establish a new disorder or tell us how common problematic use is among working adults.
The useful question is not, “Do I code a lot?” It is, “Can I choose when to stop, and what is this behavior costing me?”
Why Vibe Coding Can Be So Hard to Stop
There is not yet enough research to claim that AI coding has one proven addiction mechanism. Still, several features can make it unusually difficult to put down.
Progress arrives quickly
A prompt turns into a working screen, a passing test, or a new feature within minutes. That short distance between idea and result can make stopping feel like walking away just before the payoff.
The results are unpredictable
Sometimes the agent solves the problem beautifully. Sometimes it breaks something else. Often it gets close enough to invite another attempt. Behavioral psychology shows that unpredictable rewards can maintain behavior strongly. That makes the popular “slot machine” comparison understandable, but it is an analogy, not proof that AI coding and gambling are clinically equivalent.
One developer compared Claude Code to a video game for adults, with each difficult “level” leading to another breakthrough. Social media posts describe individual experiences and are not clinical evidence.
There is always one more useful task
The feature works, but now the interface needs polish. The bug is fixed, but the tests could be better. The next action feels both small and productive, so there is no natural stopping point.
The work feels easier than it is
Watching an agent run can feel less tiring than writing every line yourself. That can hide accumulating fatigue. You may stay mentally activated long after your judgment, patience, and ability to review code have declined.
The project becomes emotionally loaded
AI coding can offer creativity, competence, hope, status, and the possibility of a new business or career. When the tool becomes tied to identity or financial rescue, a break can feel like falling behind rather than simply ending work for the day.
Usage limits and resets create urgency
Usage windows, weekly caps, countdowns, and surprise resets can turn ordinary work into a limited-time opportunity. Official OpenAI documentation explains that Codex usage varies by plan, model, and task, with a shared five-hour window and possible weekly limits on ChatGPT plans. Scarcity can encourage people to use remaining capacity before it disappears or to wait anxiously for more.
The August 30 Codex Reset Became a Real-Time Case Study
On August 30, 2026, OpenAI’s Tibo Sottiaux posted that a Codex and ChatGPT Work reset would arrive at 6 p.m. Pacific. He challenged users to burn as much usage as possible beforehand and suggested using the faster mode.
The post quickly passed one million views and drew thousands of replies. When the reset did not appear immediately for everyone, public threads filled with people asking where it was. Some users described staying awake to wait for resets or organizing an entire weekend around remaining capacity.
The official post created a public countdown and explicitly encouraged users to consume their remaining allowance.
Another user described running experiments all weekend, nearing the weekly limit, and waiting for a promised reset.
It is tempting to joke that people were waiting for the reset “like a drug.” The reaction is striking, but it does not mean everyone commenting had an addiction. Product excitement, humor, professional pressure, fear of missing out, and genuine dependence can look similar in a social media thread.
What the episode does illustrate is how a countdown, limited access, social hype, and an uncertain reward can intensify urgency. If usage limits begin controlling your mood, schedule, or sleep, that is useful information about your relationship with the tool.
Someone Built a Prayer Wall for Codex Resets
The culture around Codex resets goes beyond ordinary product updates. An independent community parody site called Tibo Radar tracks public reset signals, estimates the odds of another reset, maps past resets by hour, and includes a “vigil wall” where users can light a virtual candle and pray for one. Participants receive generated pilgrim names. The site clearly states that it is not affiliated with OpenAI and that prayers do not control its systems.
It is a joke, and that distinction matters. The page does not prove its visitors are addicted. It does show how central the reset cycle has become to the community’s language, rituals, and attention.
Checking a balance. Saving a reset. Waiting for the post. Trying to use the allowance before another change. These behaviors can be harmless fun. They become a concern when they begin deciding when you sleep, how much you spend, or whether you are emotionally present with the people around you.
Signs of AI Coding Addiction or Problematic Use
No single sign proves addiction. Look for a repeated pattern, loss of choice, and meaningful consequences.
- You regularly code much longer than intended. A planned 30-minute task repeatedly becomes several hours.
- You have tried to cut back and could not. You make rules, delete tools, or promise your partner you will stop, then return quickly.
- Your sleep is suffering. You delay bedtime, get back up after your partner falls asleep, or lie in bed mentally composing prompts.
- You feel preoccupied when you are not coding. Meals, family time, and conversations become waiting periods before you can return to the project.
- You become unusually irritable or anxious when access is interrupted. Outages, rate limits, or a request to log off trigger a reaction that feels larger than the situation.
- You hide or minimize your use. You close windows when your partner enters, understate how late you stayed up, or conceal spending on credits and subscriptions.
- Responsibilities are slipping. Work quality, school, parenting, exercise, meals, hygiene, or household tasks receive less attention.
- Your relationship is absorbing the cost. Your partner feels ignored, goes to bed alone, or says the project receives your best attention.
- You continue despite clear harm. You know the pattern is worsening your mood, health, sleep, or relationship, but still feel unable to change it.
- Coding has become your main escape. You use it to avoid anxiety, loneliness, conflict, uncertainty, or feelings of inadequacy.
One user wrote candidly about being unable to sleep because AI coding made it so easy to keep acting on the next idea.
Passionate Hobby or Compulsion?
A hobby you love remains flexible. You decide when to start and stop. You talk about it openly. It fits around the rest of your life, and taking a night off may be disappointing but manageable.
A compulsion is less flexible. You stop only when capacity runs out or your body gives up. You minimize or hide the behavior. Your life begins fitting around the project, and a night away produces strong restlessness, anxiety, or irritability.
The difference is not whether the activity is productive. The difference is whether you still have a meaningful choice.
Signs Your Partner’s AI Coding Is Hurting the Relationship
The partner often notices first. If this list feels uncomfortably familiar, that is information worth trusting.
- You go to bed alone and wake up alone. Your partner came to bed and got back up, or never came at all.
- You are competing with something that never gets tired. A human hobby ends. An AI agent always has another possible task.
- Asking about it starts a fight. You raise the subject gently and receive defensiveness or withdrawal. That can become a pursuer-withdrawer pattern in which one person chases connection while the other retreats.
- Your partner is physically home and emotionally gone. They are in the room but answer several seconds late, rarely look up, and seem mentally elsewhere. Over time, that disconnection can resemble roommate syndrome.
- You are carrying everything else. Parenting, the house, plans, and the social calendar shift toward you. That imbalance can build resentment and contribute to emotional neglect in a marriage.
- You feel silly for being upset. It looks like work and productivity, so you question whether you are allowed to feel lonely.
You are allowed to be upset. Feeling lonely while your partner is ten feet away is one of the hardest kinds of loneliness.
How AI Coding Can Affect Sleep and Mental Health
Late-night coding combines several things that can delay sleep: screen exposure, cognitive stimulation, unfinished problems, emotional highs and lows, and the belief that one more prompt will create closure. The result may be shortened sleep, difficulty winding down, daytime fatigue, irritability, and poorer judgment.
Sleep loss can then make stopping harder the next night. A tired person may reach for the quick relief of another agent run instead of making the more difficult choice to disengage.
Research on work patterns does not prove AI caused every extra hour, but it does show why this issue deserves attention. A 2026 ActivTrak workplace report, based on digital activity from 163,638 employees, found Saturday productive hours rose 46% and Sunday hours rose 58% as AI use became increasingly common. A separate analysis of more than 500 developers reported more after-hours commits following AI adoption. These are observational findings, not proof of addiction or causation.
Important: Staying up because you feel pulled into a project is different from a sudden reduced need for sleep while feeling unusually energized, powerful, irritable, fast-talking, or able to do many things without tiring. Those can be symptoms of mania or hypomania described by the National Institute of Mental Health. Contact a qualified health professional promptly if that pattern is new or intense.
If you are running on empty at work, the signs of burnout can overlap with sleep deprivation and compulsive technology use. Persistent low mood, loss of interest, hopelessness, or other symptoms of depression deserve separate attention.
What Actually Helps
Recovering from problematic AI coding use is both practical and relational. The goal usually is not total abstinence. It is restoring your ability to choose when the session ends.
Track the real pattern for seven days
Record when you planned to start and stop, when you actually stopped, how much you slept, what you postponed, and how you felt before and after. Use real data instead of relying on the feeling that it “was not that long.”
Choose a hard stop before you begin
Set two alarms: one 30 minutes before the cutoff and one at the cutoff. The first is for saving work and writing next steps. The second means the session ends, even if the task is unfinished. Stopping while you still could continue is the skill you are rebuilding.
Create a “next prompt” parking lot
Many people keep going because they fear losing momentum. Keep a simple note with the next prompt, the current problem, and the first step for tomorrow. Your brain no longer has to hold the entire project overnight.
Turn off the reset alerts
Unfollow the reset account, close the tracker, and disable nonessential notifications. Do not “burn” usage simply because a reset is coming. Plan work around your priorities, not around a temporary allowance.
Keep the laptop out of the bedroom
Charge it in another room overnight. Protect the last hour before bed from AI coding. If a late-night idea appears, write it on paper instead of reopening the agent.
Name the near miss
When the output is almost right and you feel pulled to run it again, say, “That is the hook.” Naming the pattern creates a pause between the urge and the next action.
Replace the time instead of leaving it empty
An empty evening is easily reclaimed by the project. Choose something concrete that involves your body or another person: a walk, a show with your partner, a workout, a game with your children, or a scheduled call with a friend.
Make the relationship agreement specific
“Use it less” is hard to measure. A stronger agreement might be: “On weeknights, I will close the laptop by 9 p.m., keep it out of the bedroom, and tell you before I change the plan.” Specific agreements rebuild trust because both partners know what follow-through looks like.
Partners, lead with the loss rather than the accusation. “You are always on that thing” starts a defense. “I miss you, and I do not know how to reach you lately” starts a conversation. Rebuild the small rituals

When to Talk With a Therapist
Consider professional support if:
- you have repeatedly tried and failed to cut back
- sleep loss is affecting your mood, judgment, health, or work
- your partner no longer trusts your agreements about time or spending
- you are hiding your use or becoming increasingly isolated
- coding is your main way of avoiding anxiety, depression, conflict, or loneliness
- you experience a sudden reduced need for sleep, unusually high energy, racing thoughts, or risky behavior
You do not need to prove that you have an addiction before asking for help. Functional impact is enough.

If the answer has been no for a while, take that seriously. It does not mean you are broken, weak, or against technology. It means a useful tool may be taking more choice than you intended to give it.
You can get the decision back. Usually faster with support than without.
